I just purchased this printer (Tiger Direct). At home I have a wireless network and thought this would be the best printer to have. I do not do a lot of printing and I love doing away with cables and connections.

Tiger Direct delivered the product in a few days. Perfect! Today, I tried to set it up.

The manual directs you to two possibilities: ad hoc wireless connection, or wireless connection with access point. I fall into the latter. So I connected the printer to the wireless modem/router using the only supplied cable (it looked like a netwrok cable. BTW the documentation does not say anything about this cable). I follow the instructions but my netwrok does not assign an IP address to it. I know this because when I prss the start button and hold it for 8 seconds only a blank sheet comes out. So, OK, I said let’s use the default IP address and go through the web to set it up. I enter the default IP in the Explorer’s address bar, nothing comes up. My network obviously does not see the printer (?)

I call Samsung and a lady responds to me very condescendly that the supplied cable is not an ethernet cable but a cross-over cable (Believe me it does look like an ethernet cable). Before I hung up I told the lady that she was condescending and went and got my own ethernet cable. The same thing happened. I call back Samsung Support hoping to get a nicer customer support rep. I did, and the gentleman explained that maybe if I rebooted everything things would work. So I asked what it didn’t. He said, well then there is nothing we can do. Samsung’s help stops there! So now I am thinking of returning this product. Not a very pleasant experience so far.

As you can see I am not reporting on the quality and peformance of the printer because I could not get to use it yet. If anyone hsa better experience, I would like to hear it.

I have to admit setting up this printer from a Mac takes some skills. Unfortunately the Java interface us not perfect for setup fro

Mac so I defaulted to Explorer under Bootcamp. However I believe Firefox works okay after you get the Network interface going. The settings can be accessed by browser once the printer learns you want to use it in Network mode.

Another secret, in Snow Leopard do not bother with ScanManager. In Preview, change the Import from Scanner setting to Find Network Devices, then go back to Import from Scanner and you will see it there. VoilĂ , you’re scanning wirlelessly.

Load the printer driver from Samsung website first, then add printer from Bonjour. You’re set. Works better in Snow Leopard than 10.5.

Overall very happy with this printer. Fast, very quiet, sleek, and prints and scans wirelessly.

I had no problems setting this up to print with my iMac. Wireless printing works great. Just be warned that while this is a multi-function printer, only printing is wireless, you need to connect the machine to your Mac to use the scanner. Also the “Scan to PC” button on the printer means just that – PC only. You must use Preview on the Mac to scan.

After I was finally able to get the wireless up and running I like how the machine operates. Samsung does not include all the instructions for syncing the wireless (if there were instructions then I overlooked them). I’m not going to go through all of the steps, however I will offer three critical parts that should get you on your way if you have any knowledge about setting up a home network. 1. After you install the software, place your IP address in the address bar and press enter. 2. After you have done step one (and the configuration under the wireless section), you will need to go to your printers and right click on properties (for the samnsung scx-4500) and add a port using your IP address. 3. In order to use the wireless scanning feature, you must go back to the samsung website (download center) and download the Scan Driver/Scan Manager software. After you have installed, the Samsung Scan Manager will be located under control panel. I made a desktop shortcut. Note…the steps listed above are for PC users. Anywho, smooth printing, great color scanning but a bit of a headache to set up. The tech support at Samsung was nice and patient and English speaking! Good luck!
