  1. after using the X7170 Lexmark copier for 5 months it started indicating empty ink cartridge on newly installed ones, it also faild to allighn the printing head,( the new cartridges were from “Office Depot” and “Staples”.

I bought this off the home shopping network for $120 and it included multiple software titles as well. I needed a simple all-in-one, and I hoped this would do the trick. This printer is horrible. It’s bulky, loud, and slow. There are 2 ink tanks. One black and one color. The color tank only has 3 colors, so photos look decent at best. If you want a photo printer look elsewhere for something with 5 or 6 colors. I don’t use the printer much. Yet, the printer has frequently told me to replace the ink cartridges which are not cheap. It’ll say either cartridge not recognized, or ink low, even when there’s plenty of ink left. The fax machine will only fax a few sheets at once. Any more, and it will grab multiple sheets at once and jam. The pickup is also useless. You have to hand feed it half the time so it will work. There is no paper tray. This leads to the single most frustrating thing about this printer. The paper pickup on this printer is useless! Trying to print photos, I would load the paper, only to have it tell me the paper tray was empty. I would add more paper, and it would grab 2 sheets at once! Or it would jam. Finally, I got so frustrated, I literally smashed the printer. Surprisingly, the printer still works, but the fax is dead, and I broke the glass so the copier and scanner are dead too. It was worth it. I will enjoy taking it out back and finishing it off. I give it 2 stars only because if all you need is a copier, and a black and white paper printer, it works fine. For anything else, especially if you have a temper, look elsewhere.

I’ve had this Lexmark product for oh about 4 years now and other than running out of black ink alot since I print alot of things for work, it has run perfectly for me. I would re buy this in an instant if I needed to.

This looks impressive and I loved it for the first couple of days. The Lexmark X7170 is without question the worst multifunction I’ve owned (it’s my third). Scan quality was bad despite easy to use menu and controls. Difficult to use irregular shaped paper (4×6 or envelopes). Worst yet- paper feed went out before replacing my first ink cartridge. If you love the words “paper jam” this is the one for you. A chistle and a stone would be more effective.

  5. I can never leave this printer alone when faxing with the feeder, or printing. Jams on both ends, so much I wanted to pitch this thing out of the window! Has suddenly decided not to scan anymore manually. I have to set it up to scan now from the computer for it to work. I have seen some great print quality from hp, and am considering a move today!
