I have had this particular printer for two years now. I am a stay at home mom, and work from home. For 6 months I was an in store merchandiser. Which basically meant I went in checked inventory and various other things with each job there was tons of paperwork that I was required to print out. And I do mean TONS!! This printer never failed me while it was in constant operation.
For three to four months I worked exclusively online and did not need to print. By this time my Kodak 5100 is a year old or so. When I did eventually try to print there were problems. I called the number on my printer, within a few days received a new print head and was back in business. That has been about a year and while I think about updating to the newer model, I am sticking with this one until it quits completely.
For the average home use and occasional picture printing this is a wonderful printer. Very reliable, simple to use and the ink is SUPER CHEAP!!! I dont know about other people but I do not find that the ink goes more quickly or is of lesser quality than other printers. I purchase ink for the Kodak on about the same schedule I did any other printer. Maybe a little more often when printing pictures. This is a decent printer for the price.
I am going to give the basic problems I have encountered with this printer. There are many but this will be the last KODAK printer I will ever buy. 1st, I got it on sale for around $70. I thought it was a steal compared to others with these features. I have owned it for over a year now and it has been a nightmare. You constantly run out of ink. I print an average of 10 pages a week, sometimes a little more. This thing ran out of ink monthly, as if it were on a timer. I found out the ink replacement cartridges have a chip. WOW, way to go Kodak, you found a way to make a ton of back end money. 2nd biggest problem is that it prints certain fonts poorly. Forget about fine print, it is horrible. The biggest problem is the ink system delivery. It just doesn’t work well. After a few months it seemed to dry and cause problems.
Save yourself the time and effort. Don’t buy this machine. Used it isn’t worth the postage or gas to pick it up. Total garbage.
Kodak stick to camera’s and software. The software you get with the printer is good.
I’ve had one of these printers for a little over a year and it has been trouble. Avoid this junker.
DO NOT BUY ANY PRINTER THAT USES COMPUTER REFILL CHIPS BUILT INTO THE CARTRIDGE. All they do is waste ink and cost you lots of money.
Keep in mind folks, that your new Kodak printer is just my 5100 with a new skin….
My Kodak 5100 is about to go in the trash, and I’m contacting every consumer agency or news group I can find on the net.
I put in the new print head, and a new set of cartridges.
I go five (5) prints and it’s shut down with a replace cartridge warning.
With out a doubt, this machine is the biggest rip off I’ve run into in 20 years of using computers, and there has been a few.
Spare parts or replacements will not solve the problem of a badly engineered product and it surely will not compensate me for my time lost or aggravation.
When this printer hits the curb, it goes along with any reputation Kodak may have left.
What ever testing they did prior to production was not enough, and I really have no sympathy for people who look for quick profits, and believe that my time and money some how are not as important as theirs.
I know at Kodak there are some bean counters that simple look at this as numbers, but in the end it’s people, and this person is going to spread the word about this, and those number they can count on too.
If you are thinking of a Kodak printer, think again, and really do your research.
Most of these shopper reviews are done by people who know their jobs depend on these products selling, and they seldom spend more than a few hours with them.
In a week or two, your printer will dry up, it will suck up ink cartridges like a sponge, and you two will be sitting here using up your valuable time warning others.
Print head clogs very easily, and the problem is so bad that Kodak’s customer support sends replacements free.
But it also goes through cartridges like paper. My latest set of cartridges got me a “replace” shut down window after only five (5) prints.
Also the controls are so simplified that you have almost NO options.
I originally purchased this printer because i do quite a bit of printing of pages but rarely of photos. I also needed the scan function. I’ve now had this printer for just over 1 year. This is the 3rd set of print heads that have gone bad. I still have 2 unopened ink cartridges that i’d like to return for a refund but since I bought them 3 months ago, Kodak won’t take them back. When the printer works, it’s pretty good. No USB cord ships so you have to buy that separately but it’s fairly easy to set up. They say it uses less ink, however I’ve found that once the ink levels get down to like 5% — the quality is terrible, so really you are wasting the ink that is left.
Also, their customer support is terrible. I realize with the recession, companies have had to make cut backs but did they have to keep the ignorant ones and let go of the helpful ones? This is my 3rd print head that has gone bad in 13 months. I am quite familiar with the procedure for “testing” and have run all the diagnostics. The CS rep on the line even said to me “I see you’ve done this before” .. well then WHY are you putting me through this again. Just send me a call tag and ship out the new print heads. But it’s not just a kvetch over that. I was on hold for over an hour before they actually transferred me to someone who knew what I was talking about in the 1st place. Finally after 1 hour & 20 minutes I finally got the CS rep to send me the new print heads.
I can say that had George Eastman been listening in on my call, he’d of been rolling in his grave at the incompetence of the staff. You can bet as soon as the new print heads get here and I run though the remaining ink, I’m buying a new printer.
