The printer is impossible to install if you can not trun off the Anti-Virus software. I called the HP customer service and they were very helpful.

Picked this up today at Costco and will return it tomorrow. Came here to Amazon to find alternatives that actually connect to a home network without a major headache, and that print faster than 1 page per several minutes. This is a case where HP tried to stuff too much into one piece of plastic, so it takes forever to install the support software, when you do your network crashes, etc. etc. Ug.

I’ve had this unit for a good 6 months now and it has been one thing after the other. To be fair, when it works, it works very well. However, when it doesn’t (which is too often for an HP unit), it’s very frustrating.

Ink levels: The ink monitor is not very accurate at all. The popup window does state actual levels may be different, but using the XL cartridges appears to really confuse it. The monitor appears to regard XL cartridges as regular. I say this because once I get a low ink warning, the cartridge continues to perform just fine for a month longer. I wasted one set of cartridges trusting the monitor. Now I ignore it.

Updates: Big problem for both the computer and the unit. A good 75% of updates brings performance problems. I have a Windows XP Pro machine and some updates cause communication problems where I either lose the whole unit or just the scanner or some feature. The one fix that has the best success is reloading the software and drivers. Time consuming and frustrating. I now avoid updates.

ADF: The Automatic Document Feeder is really a piece to be re-engineered. It just stops feeding paper without me applying pressure to feed it through. I have done every cleaning remedy I could find and it’ll work once and not the next. I’ve since just avoided using it.

Customer Service: The numerous times I have called HP Support on the many issues I have with this unit, I think they recognize my phone number and pass me off to the new people who can’t seem to find a resolution using the computerized diagnosis program. HP Technical Support run through a number of steps that have no relevance to the problem I called about. I had one admit, “..well, that’s what the screen is telling me we should do”.

Summary: I’ve gone back to using my old Brother MFC-420CN. It doesn’t have automatic two sided printing, but it does what I ask it to do.

I bought this printer slightly impulsively at Costco. I was a little worried after reading some negative reviews about set up, especially since I’m on Mac, but beyond a couple of moments of puzzlement during the software installation process I had no problems getting it set up and wirelessly printing, scanning, and faxing. Did not need to call for help or visit the website for extra software. Note that there are separate instructions for Mac and PC setup in the written instructions. It took me a little while to spot this, after I had started the disk installation, and I although I had done one thing wrong–did not connect the device before starting the disk, per the PC instrux but not the Mac instrux– thought I was in for problems, but all was well. I’m so glad to be getting rid of the hardware clutter in my office!

HP J6450: Although the setup, including wireless, went well enough some features aren’t quite as expected. Double sided printing using ADF: A double-sided original WON’T yield a double-sided copy, however you can load 2 single-sided originals and get a double-sided copy. Scanning: Took a full 5 minutes to scan a color 4×6 card, scan quality was OK but much too long. Draft printing occasionally is scratchy and the machine guzzles ink FAST at normal setting. It takes a long time to run pre-test warm-ups from standby to first print job of the day. I did not load all the HP bloat that comes with the install disk, just the essential drivers and did not need/set up the FAX so can’t comment on that function. Getting used to some extraneous noise while printer is idle. I will keep the printer but it’s not much of an improvement from my really old HP PSC 2210.
