I already own one Epson WorkForce printer, the 600 model. I was almost entirely satisfied with that one, so getting the 610 for our new upstairs computer was a no-brainer.
I don’t use the wireless feature and I don’t fax anything anymore, but I do use just about everything else. The speed and quality of the prints is very good. The scanner I use all the time and it works great (although the scan area is only letter-sized, which might be a downer for some). The copier is also very good and easy to use.
To print on both sides of the paper, you need to manually refeed the sheets as with most printers. I wish this weren’t necessary, but given the price of this unit, I’m not really bothered by the lack of duplex printing (I think that’s what it’s called).
My only two worries:
1) Like most printers, this one has inks that aren’t cheap. Since you can’t run the printer when one cartridge is out, you’ll need to make certain you have additional cartridges on hand. The good thing is that each of the cartridges is a stand-alone color, so you can buy just the cartridges you need.
2) With my 600, there is a slight tipping problem where, after a few months of use, the pages are printed just a tad, well, tilted. I’ve consulted the troubleshooting sections of the manual on the Epson Web site and still can’t fix this. I don’t know if this is going to happen with the 610, but I’ll be watching for it.
Before I get started with my review I just want to let you know that this is my first printer. I have had my printer for 1-2 months. I have a macbook and a desktop that I use to print from. With this printer you have the option of printing wireless. I have chosen to print wireless from the desk top and laptop. I had very little problem with setting it up. And did not have any problems with compatibility to my macbook.
Many have covered the pros and cons of this Epson Workforce 610, so I wanted to bring up some other points:
1.) The driver installation is funky. When you load the driver CD, it asks you if you want to install the USB driver or the network driver. My recommendation to you is to install the network driver. Why? Because it ALSO installs the USB driver first. So if you install the USB driver first and then go back in and install the network driver, it reinstalls the USB driver before installing the network driver. A big waste of time.
2.) After the network driver is installed, the software spends a good minute looking for the printer over the Ethernet connection before checking for it over wifi. There should be an option to just search over wifi, since I connected mine that way and worried the software install had crashed because it took so long before letting me do anything!
3.) Turning off the printer is not a one-button affair. It always asks you some fax-related question, which I’ve thus far not been able to figure out how to disable….
But what about the printer?
As others have stated, it’s a very good all-in-one. However I’ve personally never been a fan of memory card slots on the front of printers as I prefer to edit my photos and then print from a computer. For the older, less tech savvy folks, the memory card slots feature is quite useful I’m sure. Different strokes!
Print quality is very good. I’ve no complaints here. For the money this is a very good printer. Wifi printing worked perfectly for me after the software installation, and I had no trouble connecting the printer to my hidden wireless network with encryption. The printer supports WEP encryption, WPA, WPA2 etc. All bases covered.
Overall, another fine effort from Epson in the “general purpose” printer area. Nothing stands out as amazing or terrible. It’s very decent in pretty much every way!
I received this item as a gift after my Lexmark 6170 went down. I am so happy with it. Not only was it easy to set up. It is stylish also, fits quit well into my office. I have had 2 Lexmarks prior to this Epson but the Ink Cartridges were costing me an arm and a leg. The cartridges for the Epson to replace are very reasonable and will save loads of money. The copies/pictures come out beautiful. I would definately reccomend this Epson WorkForce 610 to those looking for a good All-In-One machine. It has all the Bells and Whistles that the HIGH priced machines have at half the cost.
This is a great printer/fax/copier/scanner machine for your small business. It’s also and excellent machine for home use when you want something that does more than just print photos and webpages. The print quality is nice and sharp, like that of a laser printer. I know it’s meant mainly for business (which is what I mostly use it for) but I’ve printed some 8 x 10 photos that are very good and I wouldn’t hesitate to use it for that. Can you get better photo printing with a model or brand meant specifically for photos? Yes you can, but you have to be really nit-picky to see a difference. Printers have come so far in the last couple of years that this would have been considered an excellent photo printer just a couple years ago. You’ll be hard pressed to see much difference. And the instant-dry DURABrite® Ultra Ink system lets you handle photos right off the printer without worrying about smudging them. You know when you print a photo on plain paper how it kind of gets that wavy effect because it comes off the printer wet? This doesn’t do that. The colors look clear and natural.
The only thing I didn’t like about this printer was that I had to look over the manual to set it up. The menus weren’t intuitive for a non-reader-of-manuals type of person. That’s not to say that it was difficult to set up. It just means that if you charge ahead like I usually do, you end up scratching your head and wondering why you can’t input things like your network password and get it to “take”. Had I looked at the quick start instructions I would have realized that it’s a little different than some of the input menus I’ve seen in the past for other WiFi devices. Setting up a printer isn’t rocket science. It’s simple and quick if you just read the manual. Once I did that, it found my network right away and I was ready to print in just a few minutes that it took to install the software. I installed it on 3 PC’s and a Mac without any problem. I LOVE being able to print over a wireless network, the less wires in the tangled mess under my desk the better!
I haven’t set it up yet on a netbook that we just got this week which doesn’t have a CD drive. I’m not sure I really need a printer on that but of course I’ll try, just because I want to see how it works. I’ll post an update when we do connect and tell you how that’s accomplished.
The fax and scanner thing work great on this device as does the copier. I’ve copied a couple photos and the results were excellent. You can print on both sides of a document which is kind of nice if you’re doing a brochure or if you just want to save paper on a long print-out. It’s easy to restore colors in faded photos, to print without borders or to crop your photos or print in black and white. It’s also easy to fax a document or photo. I don’t often fax photos because it’s easier to email them, but it’s nice to know that you can. Actually, there a quite a few fancy features like setting up a speed dial or group dial list for faxing that you may not use a lot, but the feature is there if you need it. Again, check the manual for instructions because the printer has its own way of doing things.
Another nice feature is that you can print directly from a memory card. There are little slots on the printer that accommodate a whole slew of different cards. Just a few are: DD, DDHC, miniSD, miniSDHC, MultiMediaCard, Memory Stick, Memory Stick Duo and Micro, Magic Gate, xD-Picture Card (who ever heard of all these?) and more. You can then select photos from the little screen that you want to print. Nice feature if you want to print a couple photos without turning on the computer. And you can print a sheet of graph paper right from the printer. How cool is that? How many times have you needed just a sheet or two of graph paper but didn’t want to make the pilgrimage to the office supply store?
All in all, this is a great little all-in-one device that does just about everything you’ll need to run a small office or have the small office convenience right in your own home. Two thumbs up!
