I bought this at Target (they were practically giving them away). I needed an emergency printer while on an extended trip (and was not expecting any long term or heavy use). You plug it in and it does work, but be aware of Epson’s ink cartridge plows, in other words don’t get excited when you only get 100-150 pages (or less) on the included cartriges (#88) – they make 2 capacities (#88,#69) calling them Moderate and Standard (which is vague as it can get). I knew replacement ink cartridge would not be too far behind, but I was a bit shocked when 10 standard pages later the Black ink cartridge said it was empty. Obviously this was an big annoyance – if I had gotten 50 or 100 pages I would not much thought about it and just gone out to get a new cartridge. I emailed Epson and told them this was certainly not acceptable as I thought there had to be a problem. Espon Tech Support concurred and suggested I remount the cartridge (they gave me explicit directions). When that did not work Epson immediately rushed out a new set of #69 cartridges at NO COST – I had them in hand in 3 days – that is impressive and real service! Epson honored the sell and support of their product. #1) do not get excited when you run out of ink within ~125-175 pages because that is all the ink they ever put in the Moderate use versions. When you buy replacements get the Standard use ink cartridges, especially if you print more than now and then – you will get ~1/2 to 2/3 again as much. (example: these printer comes with the less ink #88 which you can buy, but get the more ink model #69 – where sometimes it is only a few dollars more, and saves you the routine of buying another too soon.) #2) Don’t waste energy getting mad – use that energy in asking if there is a problem, you might just get something out of it (it makes things a lot nicer, and Epson was eager to help).
The printer is fine, for the price… the features are fine, for the price. The ink is the usual trap… (has anyone ever got one of those free Gilette shavers? The trick is the same..) Just find an alternate and reliable source for the ink cartridges and you would not have a reason to complain about the ink (unless you are a perpetual complainer….)… one more word of advise, though: You may want to stay away from refilling cartridges!
I recently purchased the Epson NX105 All-In-One printer, and I am pleasantly surprised to have gotten such a great all in one. I was skeptical at first because when I bought it at Best Buy, it was only $30. It does a great job of scanning images quickly and clearly, and it isnt the fastest printer ever, but it gets the job done well enough for me. Great value!
I didn’t expect a lot from a printer in this price range, but was pleasantly surprised by the NX100. It copies/scans, prints photos or regular documents. The scanner isn’t high resolution, but the photo printing is. It has some neat convenience features, like individual color cartridges and a kickstand-like arm that holds up the top while you’re changing them out. It prints quickly, and the pages it produces are surprisingly clean and smooth, with nice dark blacks and rich colors.
This is by far the worst printer I have ever owner. It was on clearance and now I know why. It frequently runs out of ink even though I don’t print that much. When I change the cartridges it doesn’t recognize it and will not work. Every time I change a cartridge, I have to play around with the settings repeatedly until it magically works again. The printer utility won’t show ink levels. This printer is only 7 months old and has been nothing but a problem, will be replacing it to avoid the frustration and anger. Waste of money.
