I HAVE AN EARLIER VERSION (STYLUS PHOTO R280) OF THIS PHOTOGRAPH PRINTER WHICH IS FUNCTIONALY IDENTICAL. I USE IT ONLY TO PRINT PHOTOGRAPHS, DVD’S, AND CD’S. FOR EVERTHING ELSE I USE A HEWLITT PACKARD C7280 (A NEWER MODEL HEWLITT PACKARD ALL-IN-ONE IS FUNCTIONALLY IDENTICAL). MY EPSON HAS 44% BETTER OPTIMIZED RESOLUTION FOR PHOTO PRINTING WHICH RESULTS IN A MUCH MORE FILMY LOOK. EXCEPT FOR PHOTOGRAPHS AND DIRECT DVD AND CD PRINTING THE HEWLITT PACKARD IS BETTER. BECAUSE I PRINT A LOT OF PHOTOGRAPHS I USE AN AFTERMARKET REFILLABLE HIGH OUTPUT INK SYSTEM FOR THE EPSON WHICH IS VERY MUCH CHEAPER THAN BUYING EPSON INK CARTRIDGES OVER THE LONG RUN. EPSON PRINTERS WHICH PRINT SIZES LARGER THAN 8 1/2 ” X 11 ” ARE ALSO AVAILABLE ALONG WITH REFILLABLE INK CARTRIDGES FOR THEM. USE THE HIGHEST QUALITY PAPER THAT YOU CAN AFFORD FOR THE PURPOSE YOU WANT IT FOR AND PAY AS LITTLE AS POSSIBLE FOR IT. FREE Refillable Ink Cartridge For Epson Stylus Photo R260, R280, R380+ “6″ of 200ml Bottles Specially-Formulated Printer INK(equivalent to 78 individual ink cartridges). I purchased the Artisan 50 after my tried and true Canon i850 finally died. Up to that point I was sold on Canon. The Amazon.com reviews of the various printers were extremely helpful, so I took the plunge. I am now an Epson fan. It was very easy to set up and the size was similar to my old Canon. The 4 by 6 inch photos printed in approximately 20-25 seconds (as opposed to the 45 seconds it took the Canon)in the highest quality. The prints took approximately an hour to completely dry (As compared to the 2 hours for the Canon photos). The inks were as advertised, smudge-proof and vibrant. The quality of the prints from the Epson were slightly but noticeably better than the Canon i850. However, that could simply be a matter of personal taste. When Epson advertises that their inks produce vibrant colors, it is as advertised.
There were some negative comments that I had read prior to buying this printer regarding the need to replace the ink cartridges too often. I felt that the Canon cartidges actually lasted quite a while, plus being a lot less expensive than the HP’s (being a former HP color printer owner as well). The Canon cartridges do still last a little longer than the Epson, but it’s close. I printed approximately 350 4 by 6 inch photos in high quality and four 8.5 by 11 inch prints before having to change a single cartridge. The speed of the Epson plus the quick drying time and quality of the prints more than makes up for the additional photos that the Canon cartridges produced.
As to comments I read about the Epson being noisy. Again, it may be a matter of perception, but I did not find it noisy at all.
The only thing I have yet to try so far is their ability to print a label directly onto a CD.
Additionally, I like the the support from Epson and the quick service (24 hours). When ordering replacement cartridges from Epson for 3 or more, the shipping is free. Plus they frequently have sales on printer accessories when you register the printer with Epson. I liked this printer so much that I recommended it to a life-long HP printer advocate and she too agreed with my assessment after purchasing the same printer from Amazon.com. The only test remaining is the test of time.
I am totally impressed with this printer. I’m a professional photographer and want an easy, but professional way to give my clients DVDs with their digital negatives on them. This printer blew me away! The quality of the print on the disk was excellent, the speed of printing was quick and it was generally quiet. I recently purchased (and sent back) the Dymo Discpainter because it didn’t even come close to acceptable, even for personal use.
Bottom line is, if you are looking for a printer to create labels for CDs and DVDs, then this is a great value and the DVDs come out excellent.
I use Epsons Great line of Photo Printers The Epson Artisan 50 Is a good addition For Printing HD photos.
The service That I recieved from Amazon was outstanding
I’ve had this printer for 2 months now. It replaces my Epson Photo Stylus R200 (a fairly good printer). The Artisan 50 does an excellent job in all aspects. Photos are the best I’ve seen from a low-cost printer. CDs/DVDs print perfectly. The disc printing software that comes with the unit works fine. The printer is fast and hasn’t had any problems feeding paper or discs (a big problem with the old R200). It is a little noisy when intially feeding paper, but not a huge problem for me. I just replaced the black cartridge for the first time. It seems to have good ink life. I’m sure the high-capacity cartridges will be even better. If it stands up over time, I will be very happy.
