  1. First I had issues even getting it to print but that was a Vista problem, I think. I’ve never had to buy so much ink for a printer in my life. I wish my HP deskjet still worked. Now I’m getting this thick black line when trying to make copies. I don’t print that much and it’s only been a year or so since I bought this printer. The software it came with is not easy to use and doesn’t come with many options.

I have been very happy with my Dell 948. I am a computer bimbo, so I haven’t figured out how to use the remote capability. (I’m sure it is exceedingly simple.) But I have had good luck with copying, scanning and printing. I HAVE had the experience of running out of ink in a very short time. Turns out the sensor for empty ink cartridges is poor. After having replaced the cartridges after just a minimum of use, I thought of getting another printer because of the cost of Dell’s proprietary ink cartridges. However, I read somewhere about poor ink sensors and decided to just keep printing until the page no longer prints properly. Well, it has been at least 6 months more of use without any sign of loss of ink. Good thing I didn’t mail back the old cartridges. I will just reinstall them when these truly run out. They must have oodles left in them. Now the only problem with the poor ink sensor is that every time I print, I have to go through the extra step of telling it “yes, DO print even though you think the ink is out.”

I’ve had this printer for 2 years now. I use it intermittandly. But there are a few things I hate about it:

Scanning over a network has never worked for me. However, scanning directly to a memory card does work great and is a nice option.

The ink lasts for a pitifully short time. I replaced the black ink cartridge ($20) about 2 months ago. It is now empty again, and I think it was good for about 100 pages. That’s ridiculous. My canon printer’s black ink costs 1/2 that and lasts for about 6 months.

You can only get ink from Dell or now from Staples. Still, its not easy to just run out and buy.

The Dell 948 seems on the surface to be a pretty good value for the money. It’s a great price, and the quality of its printing is very high. But since I’ve had mine, I’ve had to replace the ink cartridges twice, and it’s now calling for yet another set — both black and color — even though I’ve only printed maybe 5 pages at the most. No exaggeration — FIVE pages. The first time, right after I got it, I printed all of two pages before it told me I was nearly out of ink.

So I ordered a set of cartridges from Dell, thinking maybe the ones that were shipped with the printer were some kind of trial thing with hardly any ink or something. When the package arrived, the black cartridge was leaking all over the inside of the box. I called Dell, and after being on with tech support for 45 minutes, I finally got them to send me a replacement for free…after they tried to weasel me into paying for it! And Dell cartridges are expensive! And then five pages later…”almost out of ink.”

I don’t understand how a printer can be out of ink after printing under 10 pages! It’s crazy! I will NEVER buy another Dell printer. EVER.

My Dell 940AIO was easy, but my new 948 is even easier! Better standard options include multi-card reader adn pic-bridge! It delivered promptly and is operating well!
