Buyer Beware, Cannon Corporation absolutely, NO HELP! I received a NEW Cannon D 480 Copier today!! The box was undamaged, but the toner cartridge was cracked and leaking! I reported this to Cannon today, and they said, “Send it back to Amazon!” We replied, “This is absurd, send us a new cartridge! They said, “NO, you send us your proof of purchase, and THE CRACKED CARTRIDGE, they refused to pay shipping to return the cartridge. We spoke with four people along with emails to a supervisor. And this after they hung up on us the first time. These people are some of the WORST out there. Would not recommed buying anything Cannon.
I bought the D480 new on Amazon. Right out of the box it would not copy — gave an error message 228. I called Canon. They answered quickly but took over five minutes on hold to conclude it was a lamp related problem. I expected they would send a new replacement copier, but NO. They will exchange for a “reconditioned” one (they will pay shipping), or I can take it to a service center, over 20 miles away.
What kind of custome service is that?
Then I read that the “starter toner cartridge” is only 1/2 full. Not the 2000 pages I had expected from reading reviews. Why would they do that cheapskate act when filling it up is good customer service.
I took the copier to the service center where the agent suggested I send it back to Canon rather than leave it with him. I called Canon yesterday and the replacement arrived this morning — overnight air service is pretty good! The replacement looks new and works fine.
So my review is a little mixed.
I would give it 3 stars but I can’t seem to be able to change the stars.
I agonized about offering up a review but felt I had to. Please don’t think I’m egotistical but I’ve owned pcs since my first Apple II in 1978 and am a certified and licensed tech, have hired and trained customer support techs and reps and have been around a lot since I’m 62.
Stay away from this printer. The previous reviews indicate some good an bad points about this device. The hardware is not bad but the manuals, software support etc. leave too much to be desired that you should spend your money on this MultiFunction(?) device.
I’m ready to drop it off at an electronic recycling facility in the area. It just doesn’t perform as claimed. Forget scanning of any type without a lot of struggling. The printer is slow and I don’t consider it high quality. As a fax, I’ve seen a lot better devices and as a copier it’s so so.
It is subject to jams and feed problems of all types and I wouldn’t wish this on my worst enemy. I’m not that cruel. Even at Amazon’s great pricing it’s just not worth the money.
I think I’ll go back to HP products and I’ve had no problems other than they wear out after a few years.
I have been using HP printers for a long time, i.e. for the past 10 years, a decade. I used to think about companies other than HP and laugh about them making printers, but all of it changed when I bought Canon D480. This wonderful machine I ended up buying for only $200 after mail in rebate (directly from Canon), I bought the printer at my local Staples store.
Best things about the printer:
(1) It is Laser technology, so no worry of changing the god forsaken separate ink cartridges. You only worry about one item which includes a toner and drum thing in it. So it is virtually maintenance free except you buying toner after every 2000 pages, which is understandable as it is the capacity of the toner.
(2) It is a printer, copier, fax, scanner in one machine.
(3) Software installation took less than 5 minutes.
(4) You can buy a Silex Wireless Printer Server and make this machine fully wireless with all capabilities. And Silex is a Canon brand so it is supported by Canon support.
Any bad things about the printer, I cannot think of any right now. If any come up, I will definitely update, but I can tell you after buying this machine, I think I can kick anybody’s when it comes to printing, scanning, copying and faxing.
Great printer for the price, especially considering the duplexing ADF. I purchased the printer mainly to serve as a network printer, copier, and fax – network scanning was not a priority for me – and I am satisfied with the printer performance so far. During setup, I was frustrated when searching for linux support, and initially it appeared the printer would only work with Windows. However, a cups-compatable driver does exist (google ‘d460-490 linux ufrII driver’ – it’s on the Canon-Asia website), and the network print functions work well with openSuSE. Be warned that the full feature-set of the printer is not available in linux, however (look at HP printers if that is a requirement for you).
