  1. BJC 55 Printer Used – I’ve started using it just few days ago and I find excellent to be a portable printer.

  2. Having a tiny apartment, I went online to find a small portable printer, but was disappointed with the options. Finding all the current “portable” printers too large, I turned to a friend who had offered me his old printer. It is a beautifully sleek, impossibly small, exceedingly simple Canon BJC-55. Unfortunately it was not working with either of his accompanying cartridges, blinking a “needs service error” (error codes can be found here:[...]). So we ascertained that it was hosed and I tossed it down my three story garbage chute.

Soon afterward, I decided to try another tactic to get it working. My groundbreaking idea? Try a new ink cartridge, duh. It would be a $40 experiment but if successful, I’d have my dream printer, a functioning BJC-55. So I fished it out of the dumpster, wiped off the coffee grounds, ordered a new ink cartridge, and by golly, what do you know, it worked!

I plug it into my nearly one year old MacBook Pro and it just works. No drivers to install, no nothing. Just hit print and it’s on its way. The only thing I haven’t figured out is how to print more than one page at a time.

As for my highest priority, size, the smallest new printer on the market seems to be the Canon PIXMA iP100. The BJC-55 beats it in all dimensions: it’s nearly one inch narrower in width, half an inch shorter in height, three inches shorter in length and two and a half pounds lighter in weight.

In summary, the BJC-55, while old, is pretty idiot and abuse proof. It has a pleasing design, only three buttons and two lights, survived a three story fall, is “plug and print” and smaller than any newer model I could find. The BJC-55 is a printer that’s truly portable!
