I can’t say enough about this machine. I wanted a multifunction printer but had no desire to go the inkjet route. This printer (which Amazon is selling for about $100 less than I paid for it a year ago) gives you laser quality for a great price.

And, of course, it’s a multifunction, so it also makes copies, scans, and sends faxes. I’ve found the quality of all of these functions to be simply superb. Also, I find the machine very easy to use. If I want to scan a picture, I press the “scan image” button and the software opens on my desktop. If I want OCR scanning, I press “Scan OCR.” What more could you ask for?

I remember reading older reviews of this product and having concerns about XP compatibility. Well, I can report that that problem has long since been solved. I’m running XP and the printer, which the box now says is XP compatible, works just fine.

Now it’s true, as the reviewer below says, that it sucks a lot of power, but that was true also of a Panasonic laser printer I had years ago. It hasn’t caused us any problem.

In short, this machine is an amazing bargain. It gives you great quality, and it’s super reliable. I’ve really given it a workout, printing out entire book manuscripts on it, with no problems. A great, great printer.

Brother must have updated the software for this multifunction marvel since some of the reviewers wrote in late 2002, because I have been using it on XP for about three months now with no problems whatsoever. Installation was easy, and instructions were well-laid out in the step-by-step poster that comes inside the box.

I will note that the last driver installation step on the poster is unnecessary — the first of the two available drivers installs fine and gives full Windows functionality. I think that the extra driver may let you do some extra things, but for general home/business use, I have felt no limitations.

The MFC works extremely well with both its standalone functions (fax and copy with automatic doc feeder) as well as with its computer-connected functions (scan, fax from PC, print). I have been nothing but pleased with each and every function.

If you don’t need color printing, this is a great buy. The laser engine produces pages that are high quality, resistant to sun/water, and outputs them quickly (after a fairly short first-page warmup). Also, cost per page is very low.

One final point — the box that this comes in is BIG and the unit is heavy. Be sure that you either ship this one to its final destination, or that you have access to a car big enough to carry it. (Think station wagon or SUV, given the length x width x height of the shipping box.) Also, the unit itself is fairly large, so just make sure you’ve found a good place for it.

Nice all in one but it will not “COPY” to 8×14 without having to reduce the copy to a 8×11. “Printing” to 8×14 is AOK. The overall unit is excellent but if legal copying is important buy a multifunction with the ablility to COPY to legal without reducing.

I bit the bullet and moved from XP to Win 2000 with this device. It did not perform well at all under XP — for example none of the software modules work under XP and the driver seems inefficient. Under 2000 the software works and the printer is engaged faster. I also went with the cable rather than the parallel port and it seems to transmit data faster. I went from being ready to return it to now feeling like it was a good purchase. The printer, after page 1, is quite fast. I recommend downloading both drivers from the Brother website for Win 2000.

This had to be one of the easiest things I’ve ever installed in my life. You follow the “big” layout of the system, and you are rocking. I’m going to buy the 2nd tray as it will be so nice to be able to have two paper sizes automatically. That’s the only thing I’d complain about……that it wasn’t possible to buy this option in the store. Printing is fast, faxing is great, the coping is awesome and the scanning works too! It’s so nice to buy a product where all of the features actually work.
