Do not under any circumstances buy a Brother printer. They rig the machine so that it will accept no generic toners. You use a brother toner or the machine won’t work. Amazing!
The quality of the copies that are produced is acceptable but not outstanding. My older Canon dedicated copier made better quality copies, and was faster. This may be the result of the compromise inherent in a multifunction machine compared to a machine that is dedicated to do one task. What is of concern is that this Brother began to make mechanical noises from its paper path when copying when it was less than 90 days old. On-site service is not covered under warranty. The local authorized service centers want $80 to $90 for on-site service, so the I had the machine taken to an authorized service center, where it is now waiting for parts. The machine will be out of service for at least one week. I am using a flat-bed scanner to do copying in the interim. I have a Brother fax machine which has been reliable, so the break-down of this machine is disappointing. I wonder if this machine will continue to be unreliable in the future. If I had to do it again, I would choose a Canon or HP.
We purchased this unit to replace an ancient analog copier. The Brother is less than half the size of the other unit and provides multiple functions. We are very pleased with the performance.
I bought this to use as a network printer, but the buggy control center software bundled with it only managed to connect to the printer on some of the Windows computers I own. The story doesn’t end there though. Brother has an extensive driver catalog supporting a wide array of operating systems, so I was able to rig the system up to a Linux box it sits near via USB and use CUPS to share it around the house. With that, all of the Windows boxes can now easily connect via Internet Printing Protocol without the control center software and using only the minimalist print drivers. There are even drivers for this thing on XP Pro x64 which is impressive considering that poor OS has become neglected by wildly popular software like iTunes, and this is not to mention the distribution-specific instructions and drivers Brother has made available on Linux.
As for the printer itself, it sports a selectable duplex auto feeder for scanning in addition to a flatbed, and it has full duplex printing. I’m around 600 pages on this thing and it hasn’t jammed or had any trouble once. It does make all the lights flicker and spins up some pretty loud fans when it is warming up to print, but it hasn’t blown a fuse. Scanning works great with XSane on Ubuntu, and printing warm-up and completion time is incredibly short even relative to larger and pricier office units I have dealt with.
I got a great price on this refurbished at Staples about 6 months ago when they still carried it, and it really can’t be beat for the price. I would recommend getting this if a deal comes up, and I am confident that Brother will support it with drivers long into the future.
I have a Brother DCP 8065dn, also Brother MFC 8660dn also a Brother lable maker.
I have had other brand ink jet printers and laser printers, and Brother just beats them all.
When it comes to toner TN580 high yield cartridges that give you 7,000 pages, that is awesome. Also the Drum units give 25,000 pages. You should use the genuine cartridges if you do not want problems and at times you can find them cheap, and I always keep one extra on hand.
The crisp quality of the printing is awesome.
Big difference from Lexmark, and HP.
Brother is the only way to go.
